Beyond Belief: Moving from Knowing About Jesus to Trusting Him

Pastor Jen Wilson

One of the top seven spiritual questions searched on Google is: “Is Jesus God?” It’s a question people wrestle with intellectually, theologically, and personally. But for many believers, the real struggle isn’t in answering that question—it’s in living as if it’s true.

It’s possible to:

  • Know about Jesus.

  • Believe He existed.

  • Agree He is God.

  • Intellectually grasp His theological definition.

  • Biblically support His divinity.

  • Even share with others who Jesus is

…and yet not truly trust Him. This is the believer’s struggle.

The Danger of Stagnant Belief

James 2:19 warns us: “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.” In other words, intellectual belief alone doesn’t transform us.

The Pharisees had deep scriptural knowledge, yet when God Himself stood before them, they resisted Him. Why? Because believing in Jesus isn’t the same as surrendering to Him.

The question isn’t just: “Do you believe Jesus is God?”

The real question is: “Are you living as if Jesus is Lord?”

How to Move from Belief to Trust

If we want to move beyond belief into a deeper relationship with Jesus, we must address three critical areas:

1. Reflection: Where Am I Stuck?

Before we can grow, we need to identify where we are in our faith journey.

Ask yourself: ✅ Do I know about Jesus, but feel distant from Him? ✅ Do I believe in Him, but struggle to trust Him with everything? ✅ Can I defend my faith, but not always live it out boldly?

Challenge: Be honest. Where do you see yourself?

2. Response: What’s Holding Me Back?

Many believers struggle to fully trust Jesus in certain areas. What’s stopping you from taking that next step of faith?

Fear“What if I let go and He doesn’t come through?”Control“I trust Jesus, but I still try to handle things myself.”Disappointment“I believed before, but things didn’t work out.”Routine Faith“I know the right answers, but my heart feels distant.”

Challenge: Identify one area where you struggle to fully trust Jesus. Be specific.

3. Action: What’s My Next Step?

Faith is more than agreement—it requires action. True belief in Jesus means allowing Him to lead every area of life.

If you struggle with fearPray boldly about something that feels risky.

If you struggle with controlSurrender something specific to Jesus in prayer.

If you feel distantCommit to intentional time with Jesus daily.

If you fear sharing your faithTell someone why you believe Jesus is God this week.

Challenge: What’s one step you can take today to live as if Jesus is truly Lord?

Final Thought: Belief Must Lead to Transformation

Jesus doesn’t just call us to believe in Him; He calls us to follow Him.

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46)

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Maybe this is your moment to move beyond belief—beyond knowing, beyond agreeing, beyond comfortable faith—into a life fully surrendered to Jesus as Lord. Has knowlegde replaced faith in your life or experience become a barrier to your faith? Let Jesus know what is truly on your mind and then wait for His response.

Are you ready to take that step?
