Recognizing the Battle: Understanding the Necessity of Training

Pastor Jen Wilson

Do you know the battle you’re facing?

It’s one thing to hear about the spiritual battle—it’s another thing to recognize how it affects your daily life. The enemy wants to keep people blind to the reality of this war, but the more we grow spiritually, the more we begin to see the battle for what it is. The question is, are you paying attention?

1. The Battle is Not Against People

Many times, we think our biggest struggles come from difficult people, frustrating situations, or unfair circumstances. But the Bible tells us something different.

Ephesians 6:12"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

The true battle is not against other people—it’s against spiritual forces that influence this world. Satan tries to use distractions, division, and deception to make us fight against each other rather than recognizing the real enemy.

2. Recognizing the Enemy’s Strategy

How does the enemy operate? If we don’t understand his tactics, we can’t effectively resist them.

  • Distraction – The enemy wants to keep us focused on everything except God. He uses busyness, entertainment, stress, and even good things to pull our attention away from what really matters.

  • Doubt – Satan’s first tactic in the Garden of Eden was to make Eve question what God said (Genesis 3:1). He still works the same way, whispering lies that cause us to doubt God’s love, power, or presence.

  • Fear and Anxiety – The enemy wants us paralyzed by fear, unable to step into God’s calling. But fear is never from God. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”

  • Temptation – Just as Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), he tempts us with shortcuts, pleasure, and compromise. His goal is to make sin look attractive while hiding the consequences.

  • Division – The enemy knows that a divided church, family, or community is weak. He works through offense, misunderstanding, and pride to turn people against each other.

3. Your Battle is Connected to Your Spiritual Gifts

One of the reasons spiritual attacks are so intense is because the enemy targets what God has placed in you. Your spiritual gifts, calling, and purpose are direct threats to the kingdom of darkness.

1 Peter 4:10“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

When you step into your spiritual gifting—whether teaching, serving, encouraging, or leading—the enemy will try to discourage, distract, or disqualify you. Why? Because when you use your gifts for God’s kingdom, you advance His purposes and weaken the enemy’s influence.

Here are a few examples of how the battle often aligns with spiritual gifts:

  • If you are gifted in leadership, you may face attacks of self-doubt or fear of failure.

  • If you have a strong prophetic voice, the enemy may try to silence you through intimidation.

  • If you are called to intercession, you might battle distraction, weariness, or discouragement.

  • If you have a heart for serving others, the enemy may attack your energy and motivation.

Recognizing this connection can help you fight strategically. Instead of seeing difficulties as random, understand that the enemy is specifically targeting what God has anointed in you. This is why Paul urges us to guard what has been entrusted to us:

2 Timothy 1:14“Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.”

If you are under attack, it may be a sign that your calling is significant. Keep standing firm, knowing that God will empower you to walk in His purpose.

4. Training for the Battle

Just like a soldier or athlete, spiritual training is essential for victory. You don’t show up on game day or the battlefield unprepared—you train in advance. Our training follows a structure that strengthens us for the fight ahead. Here is a structure for training:

Warm-Up: Preparing Your Spirit

PrayerMark 1:35 – Jesus regularly withdrew to pray, showing us that intimacy with the Father is essential before facing challenges. ✔ WorshipPsalm 95:6 – Worship sets our focus on God, inviting His presence and realigning our perspective before battle. ✔ Bible ReadingJoshua 1:8 – Meditating on God's Word strengthens our minds and equips us with truth.

Strength Training: Building Spiritual Muscle

Daily Application of ScriptureJames 1:22 – Obedience to God’s Word strengthens us to stand firm against deception. ✔ Developing DiscernmentHebrews 5:14 – Training in righteousness helps us distinguish between good and evil. ✔ Faith in Action2 Corinthians 5:7 – Walking by faith, not sight, builds spiritual endurance.

Resistance Training: Fighting Back Against the Enemy

Putting on the Armor of GodEphesians 6:11-17 – The shield of faith, sword of the Spirit, and helmet of salvation equip us to resist attacks. ✔ FastingMatthew 6:16-18 – Fasting sharpens our spiritual focus and strengthens our reliance on God. ✔ Speaking God’s Promises in the Midst of TroubleMatthew 4:4 – Jesus resisted Satan by declaring Scripture; we must do the same.

Endurance Training: Staying in the Fight

Perseverance in TrialsJames 1:2-4 – Trials refine our faith and build endurance. ✔ Patience in WaitingIsaiah 40:31 – Those who wait on the Lord renew their strength. ✔ Community SupportHebrews 10:24-25 – Encouraging one another helps us stay strong.

Cool-Down: Resting in God’s Presence

Observing the SabbathExodus 20:8-10 – Rest is a command, not a suggestion. It renews our strength for the battle ahead. ✔ Casting Burdens on God1 Peter 5:7 – Surrendering our worries to God brings peace. ✔ Finding Refreshment in ChristMatthew 11:28-30 – Jesus invites us to rest in Him, carrying His easy yoke.

💡 Reflection Questions:

  • Where do you need to grow in your spiritual training?

  • Which area (prayer, Scripture, fasting, etc.) needs more focus in your life?

  • How can you develop endurance for long-term spiritual battles?

💡 Challenge: Identify one area in your spiritual training that needs strengthening this week and commit to improving it.
